Charleston artist and former gallery owner, Cecile Langham Cothran, has been designated an instructor of The Portrait Institute, New York City. She teaches the John Howard Sanden method of the single sitting portrait technique at her studio near Charleston, SC. Sanden's approach employs the practice of the one sitting portrait, painting a live model. Cothran is the only artist in South Carolina to be named an instructor by Sanden.
"I first approached Mr. Sanden about teaching in his program and was accepted early in 2003, but I had just opened my gallery and studio in Charleston the fall before. I thought maybe I shouldn't take on so much at once," says Cothran, "but I love teaching, so after the gallery was running smoothly, I got back in touch with the Sandens, and started this this program in Charleston."
